My process

As a web designer, I am very committed to my projects meeting today's web standards. Part of this commitment means creating sites with XHTML/CSS. If this means nothing to you, I'll briefly explain the benefits:

Building websites with XHTML/CSS

  • Reduces the amount of overall code (your site loads faster and takes less bandwidth)
  • Makes updating your site much easier (and less expensive)
  • Makes it easier for search engines to find you
  • Can make your site accessible to those with disabilities, PDA's, mobile phones, etc.

Makes you wonder why we ever did it any other way huh?

I do not currently build Flash sites, but do like using Flash elements (such as banners or image galleries) to give a page a more dynamic feel.

The following stages for managing a project have worked for me and my clients time and time again. Here's an example of how I go about building a website:

Phase 1: Planning and design

The best plans produce the best product. I usually work with the client to develop a well thought out sitemap, decide what content is most important, and how it will be emphasized throughout the site. From there we work through a series of design compositions, to achieve the look and feels that most appropriate.

Phase 2: Production

I take the finalized design and create the code which prepares it for publication on the internet. This is done using web standards and I now create all my sites using XHTML/CSS. I do this to increase accessibility (for screen readers etc.), and to improve search engine visibility.

Phase 3: Testing and launch

In this phase I test the site in different browsers, on Mac's and PC's to make sure that everything works the way it should. When everything is good to go, the site goes live for all to see!

Pricing

I give quotes on a project to project basis. Sometimes, on smaller projects, I'll work up a flat rate, but more commonly, I'll provide an estimate and bill hourly.

A little more about me

Devon drumming

I grew up in Maine, and love the outdoors. One of my passions is sea kayaking, and I'm currently a teacher and guide in New York State and on the Maine coast. In addition to hiking in Washington State and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I was on a 3 month expedition in Mexico with NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School).

In addition to the outdoors, I live for music. I've played drums from age 4, and currently play 150 shows a year throughout the country with my band Revision.
